Guilty Pleasures

Isn’t it funny that we’re all in denial. We never really talk about those little things that make us all warm and tingly inside! Hey, who’s snickering out there? You know what I’m talking about. Those things that excite our imaginations. What? Again with the snickering?  I’m talking about guilty pleasures. Those things that make us happy but we’re embarrassed to admit. Alright, that’s it! One more time and you’re all going to have a time out! You’d thing that I was talking about sex or something. Ohhh, you do think.…I can see where you’re minds are at. I’m talking about the very human habit of…….Enough already! I’m talking about collecting!

Not coins, comic books or baseball cards. I’m talking about collecting things that accentuate your Home Décor. Items that augment the theme of your Home Design. I seem to be hesitating because I’m not quite sure what to call this type of collection; curios, knickknacks, bric-a-brac, statuettes.

Home Décor Accents! You know neat stuff!

Sometimes they’re just odds and ends that catch your eye at the thrift store. Sometimes they’re accents that you search high and low for, to help you emphasize a mood you’re trying to create.

The types are endless; throw pillows, wall hangings, statues, candles, vases, area rugs, and the styles are as plentiful as our imaginations; gnomes, frogs, beach motifes, country, modern, seashells etc ad infinitum. No matter what your guilty pleasures are, they define your lifestyle and as we all know, lifestyles can change throughout our lives.

When Kate (my wife) and I used to live with our kids in the Central Valley of California. We lived in a one story frame house and embraced a shabby chic coastal cottage look in home design. Now that we have escaped our kids (all grown) to a life of freedom in the Gulf Coast Beach Town of St Petersburg FL. We live in a Mid Century Modern, Eichler style block home and as our housing style changed, so did our guilty pleasures.

Our furniture is Danish Modern and our home décor leans to the retro style, vintage kitsch with Far Eastern accents. Faux animal skin and bold print throw pillows, exotic far eastern statuary, We even have an Atomic Era Sputnik chandelier over our glass-topped Danish Modern dining table with leopard print chair pads. The art on our walls ranges from vintage signage and photography to original abstract paintings, Dali prints and an antique, oriental prayer rug. Our guilty pleasures have even affected our eyeglass and wardrobe style.

We came here to start over and embrace a new life. One that is fresh and exciting, with less responsibilities and definitely more fun! With the help of our guilty pleasures, we’ve been able to create a whole new lifestyle. One that reflects just the two of us as a modern and carefree couple. We certainly love our kids and our families but now it’s time for us to think and live for ourselves.

I guess what I am trying to say is this. Embrace your guilty pleasures. They add color and richness to your life. It doesn’t matter if they seem strange to others, they are meant to define your own uniqueness and individuality. Hopefully your significant others and/or families are on the same wavelength, but if they aren’t you need to find space in your homes for their guilty pleasures.
